A legal doctrine that imposes responsibility on one party for the unlawful conduct of another.

The leading authority in Canada is Bazley v. Curry a 1999 Supreme Court of Canada decision involving sexual abuse.

The test adopted by the Supreme Court (sometimes referred to as the Salmond test), stipulates that employers are vicariously liable for employee torts falling within the “scope of employment.”
